From Spot Work to Full Reset: Understanding the Time Difference in Massage Sessions
By Brian Keene, BS, LMT
When it comes to massage therapy, time really does make a difference. Whether you’re managing a specific issue like tight calves or recovering from tension in your upper back, the length of your session can directly impact your results.
Why Schedule a 30-Minute Massage Session?
A focused 30-minute massage is ideal for regular clients who want to address a specific issue or goal. If you’re consistent with your activity, this shorter session can be incredibly effective for maintaining mobility, relieving tension, and supporting recovery. Even something as simple as a rejuvenating leg flush—with range of motion and stretching—can significantly improve circulation and reduce muscle fatigue.
For example, when I worked on the professional tennis tour, the first two weeks of the tournament—from qualifiers to quarterfinals—were extremely busy. During this time, athletes were required to receive 30-minute massage sessions only. Longer sessions weren’t permitted, although athletes could return later in the day if appointments were available. In each session, we would either focus on a primary and secondary issue or provide more generalized work, depending on the athlete’s needs.
What Is a Primary and Secondary Goal for a Session?
Let’s use tennis as an example. It’s common for players to experience shoulder aches and pains, especially on their dominant side. If a player serves with their right hand, the primary focus of the session would typically be the right shoulder and forearm—areas that take on the most repetitive strain. At the same time, I’d set aside some time to address the neck and left arm to support overall balance.
In this case, the primary goal is to open up and relieve tension, aches and pains in the right shoulder, while the secondary goal is to restore symmetry and balance in the upper body.
What Does a 30-Minute Sports Massage Session Look Like?
Whether you’re sitting at a desk, running, biking, or competing in sports, gravity—and repetitive movement—can work against your body’s ability to recover. That’s where a targeted 30-minute sports massage can make a difference. If you’re feeling good in your activity, scheduling regular 30-minute sessions can help maintain muscle health and support your ongoing performance goals.
Each session is tailored to your activity level and needs. For athletes in training or competition, a common focus is a leg flush—using faster massage strokes, range of motion, stretching, and targeted soft tissue work to promote circulation and release tension in muscles, tendons, and fascia.
If you’re a cyclist or triathlete, you might benefit more from focused work on the neck or the low back. No matter the focus, consistent 30 minute sports massages can help reduce accumulated tension and support recovery, mobility, and long-term performance.
Why Schedule a 60 Minute Massage Session?
A 60 minute massage allows for more focused regional work—such as addressing the upper body, lower back and hips, hips and legs, or lower legs and feet. While it’s not a full-body session, this length provides enough time to dive deeper into multiple connected areas that may be contributing to pain or dysfunction.
By expanding the therapeutic focus, we’re able to work through layers of fascia and connective tissue that may be reinforcing compensatory movement patterns. With each session, you’ll begin to notice improvements in mobility, structural balance, and overall functionality.
What Does a 60 Minute Massage Session Look Like?
As we like to say—not all massages are created equal. Why? Because advanced training in manual therapy techniques and years of hands-on experience are what truly set a massage practitioner apart. You may be familiar with a traditional, spa-style massage—but rest assured, that’s not exactly what we do here.
A 60-minute massage focused on a specific region of the body can have a powerful impact on your ability to move and function in daily life. For example, if you’ve recently undergone Achilles tendon surgery or a total knee replacement, the surrounding tissues require focused manual work. Post-surgical movement restrictions often create a chain of compensations throughout the body, starting at the surgical site.
By addressing these areas regionally, we help restore proprioceptive awareness in the fascia, muscles, and tendon attachments—signaling to the body that it’s safe to re-engage and function optimally.
Why Schedule a 90 Minute Massage Session?
For those seeking full-body relief and deeper relaxation, a 90 minute massage offers a comprehensive reset. This extended session supports not only your physical body, but also your mental state—and for some, it can even feel like an emotional or spiritual release (though results vary).
You might simply enjoy the chance to step away, close your eyes, and disconnect from the demands of daily life—but make no mistake, we’re still doing the work. A 90 minute massage is ideal for monthly or bi-monthly clients who need a deeply therapeutic and restorative experience that allows us to address the whole body with care and precision.
What Does a 90 Minute Massage Session Look Like?
A 90 minute massage session is highly customized and varies based on each client’s needs. This extended time allows us to incorporate a variety of therapeutic techniques, which may include soft craniosacral work, targeted deep tissue manual therapy, assisted stretching and range of motion, as well as the use of vibration tools or an infrared wrap.
The longer session gives us the flexibility to address the full body while also focusing in on key areas that need more attention, creating a truly restorative and well-rounded experience.
What Should I Expect During My Customized Massage Session?
Your session begins with a brief intake and check-in with your massage therapist, where your goals and needs are discussed. Based on that conversation, your therapist will tailor the session specifically to you.
Clothing is optional and depends on your comfort level and the focus of the massage—your therapist will guide you based on your goals. Professional draping techniques are always used to ensure your privacy, safety, and comfort, regardless of the session type or duration.
